Buffett Foundation, Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) and Feeding America, is the first wide-scale effort to organize U.S. farmers to support hunger relief. One out of six people in the U.S. go hungry. Problems associated with hunger are not just confined to certain areas, or neighborhoods.  In fact, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 14.7 percent of rural households were consistently short on food. Two Gottsches and a Buffett climbed aboard a 1967 John Deere in Elkhorn last week, planting the seeds for the nation’s farmers to support local food banks.

The tractor ride kicked off a campaign that will include a live broadcast on RFD-TV in August, a documentary that traces a crop from planting to sale and an appearance in the Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year’s Day — a float trailed by antique tractors buzzing down Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena, Calif.

The Gottsches were Patrick, the president of RFD-TV’s Rural Media Group, and his brother, Mickey, a farmer. The Buffett was Howard W., grandson of Omaha investor Warren Buffett and an executive with his father’s Howard G. Buffett Foundation.

The national launch of the RFD-TV/RURAL TV promotional campaign in support of the Howard G. Buffett Foundation’s “Invest An Acre” was celebrated yesterday with a planting of the first-ever two acres on a small farm located near Elkhorn, Nebraska.

One acre of corn and one acre of soybeans were symbolically planted by RFD-TV and RURAL TV to represent the support of the American farmer for the Buffett initiative in conjunction with ADM and Feeding America. Howard W. Buffett and Patrick Gottsch, Founder/President Rural Media Group, Inc., were on hand for the ceremony, and each drove the tractor during the planting.

The Howard G. Buffett Foundation and Archer Daniels Midland have announced the launch of the Invest an Acre initiative, which is designed to encourage U.S. farmers to donate the profits from the sale of an acre or more of their crops to Feeding America.

Established by the farming son of billionaire investor Warren Buffett, the foundation will create an opportunity for farmers doing business with ADM to invest a portion of their proceeds at the point of sale, either when the farmer signs a contract or delivers a crop. The middle child of billionaire investor Warren Buffett and the future nonexecutive chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, Mr. Buffett, along with his foundation, owns 3,780 acres of farmland across three counties in central Illinois. He bumps along rows of corn and soybeans in a tractor outfitted with a GPS system, air-conditioning, a radio, an iPad and a cellphone.

Buffett and other organizers planned to announce the “Invest an Acre” initiative Thursday. It will encourage farmers around the nation to donate profits from the sale of 1 acre’s crop to the charity Feeding America, which will use the money to support food banks in rural communities where advocates say malnutrition is a serious — if often overlooked — scourge.

“Poverty and hunger in rural America is very much out of sight, out of mind,” said Howard Buffett, who in 1999 established a foundation to help the world’s needy. “It doesn’t jump out at you. It’s not like the brazen images of starving children in Ethiopia … but that doesn’t mean it isn’t just as devastating to people who are hungry.”
